The marimba is the most distinctive musical instrument of the Afro-Colombian Pacific, first brought by enslaved Africans during the Spanish colonial era. Afro-Colombian artisans like Lorenzo Díaz Gamboa preserve this musical legacy by hand-crafting high-quality marimbas using endemic woods such as chonta (peach palm) and guadua (a type of bamboo).
