东方红 (The East Is Red)

Performed by Anonymous Chinese Americans.
Recorded October 3, 2026 in New Haven, Connecticut.

This song served as the de facto national anthem of the People's Republic of China during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. The lyrics are attributed to Li Youyuan, a farmer from Shaanbei (northern Shaanxi province), while the melody was derived from a local peasant love song from the Loess Plateau.

The informants have chosen to remain anonymous, given that in their homeland, public criticism of Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is heavily censored and legally penalized.

东方红,太阳升,
中国出了个毛泽东。
他为人民谋幸福,
呼尔嗨哟,他是人民大救星!
The east is red, the sun is rising.
From China, appears Mao Zedong.
He strives for the people's happiness,
Hurrah, he is the people's great savior!
