Alabo a Dios cantando walina1

Illusions come, illusions go
Life passes by and new life arrives
With each new day's dawn
I praise God by singing a walina1

Striking its waves
Water flows through my canal2
Nurturing the lovely flowers
That adorn your little hat

It's emotional to sing to the waters
That come and go, never to return
Such is life, nothing but illusions
When they fade, we shall fly, never to return

1. A genre of ritual water song from San Pedro de Casta. Sometimes spelled hualina, the term derives from warina, a reference to the ancient Wari civilization that built Casta's irrigation system.

2. An acequia is a ditch or canal that forms part of Casta's irrigation system and water cycle. From Cunya comes the water that flows into Carhuayumac, Casta's principal canal. From there the water is diverted into a series of reservoirs or lakes called cochas and canals called acequias, gradually flowing down the hills into Casta’s many thirsty fields.
