Pregones

A pregón is a cry intended to publicly announce a matter of interest, such as the cries of street vendors advertising the sale of their goods or services. The term, originating in Spain and Latin America, can have a number of meanings depending on the social function. For example, it can refer to the proclamation of an important celebration, whether religious or civic, made by a prominent figure of the community such as a literary figure or journalist. This practice can evolve to the point that it is no longer limited to a recited phrase. It can include an elaborate display of musical performance or speech, with accompanying performers.

In some countries, the pregón has evolved from a sales method into a musical genre. Popular songwriters in the Caribbean and in South America have taken inspiration from pregones, and vendors (or
pregoneros) likewise can take inspiration from popular music. The development of this custom seems to be related to the climate, since at low temperatures vendors may be less willing to sing or shout in the open air.
