El puente está quebrado

Performed by Mariela Medina.
Recorded December 9, 2024 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Ms. Medina, of Fusagasugá, Colombia.

Ms. Medina describes a children's game associated with this rhyme. As the rhyme is recited, children pass through a bridge made by an arc formed by the arms of two other children. When the rhyme ends, whoever is underneath the bridge is grabbed and the others race to take his or her seat. The losing player (based on Ms. Medina's description it is unclear whether this is the player grabbed or the player who lost the race) would have to perform a penalty such as dance or perform a similar action. The game's rules as well as the lyrics of the rhyme vary throughout Latin America.

El puente está quebrado.
¿Con qué lo curaremos?
Con cáscaras de huevo,
burritos al potrero.

Que pase el rey.
¿Qué ha de pasar?
Que todos los hijos
se ha de quedar.
The bridge is broken.
How shall we fix it?
With eggshells,
donkeys to the pasture.

Let the king pass.
What will happen?
All the children
must stay.
