康定悄歌 (Love Song of Kangding)

Performed by Anonymous Chinese Americans.
Recorded October 3, 2026 in New Haven, Connecticut.

This Chinese folk song from Kangding, Sichuan was adapted from "Liu Liu Diao," a more ancient folk song from the same town. It was collected and arranged in the 1940s by Wu Wenji under the title "On the Rolling Mountain of Paoma." Later it was set to music by Jiang Dingxian and renamed "Kangding Love Song." Vocalists such as Yu Yixuan have since made the song popular throughout China.

Upon the rolling Paoma Mountain,
a drifting cloud floats by,
Casting its gentle light perfectly
over the town of Kangding.
The moon hangs curved and bright
above the town of Kangding.

The eldest daughter of the Li family
is a beauty to behold;
the eldest son of the Zhang family
has set his heart on her.
The moon hangs curved and bright;
he has set his heart on her.
