San Pedro de Casta
Luce sus colores
Con su Champería1
Fiesta del agua
Y sus bella ruinas de Marcahuasi
La vida de todo casteńito2
Trabajamos sin contar las horas
Todos adoramos a Madre Cunya3
Porque nos mantiene
Con sus agüitas
San Pedro de Casta
Displays its vibrant colors
With its Champería1
The Festival of Water
And its beautiful Marcahuasi ruins
Such is the life of every Castan2
We work without counting the hours
We all revere Mother Cunya3
For she sustains us
With her precious waters
1. Champería is an eight-day water festival celebrated each October in the agrarian community of San Pedro de Casta. During Champería, Casteños sing walinas (water songs) as they clean the irrigation canals and reservoirs that water their fields, organize traditional games, share ceremonial coca and chicha (maize beer), and carry out the ritual labor that ensures the flow of water for another year.
2. From the village of San Pedro de Casta.
3. Cunya (sometimes spelled Cuñaq or Kunyaq) is the name of a mountain spring that feeds Carhuayumac, the most important canal in San Pedro de Casta's irrigation system. While the name's etymology is somewhat unclear, it may allude onomatopoetically to the sound of the water as it bubbles forth from the spring.
