Por acequias y caminos
Voy cantando esta walina1
Buscando agüita
Linda Cunya,2 al no encontrarte
Me voy llorando

Agüita fresca
Agua brillante
Agua del cerro
Día y noche a Pampacocha
Por nuestra acequia

Agüita fresca
Agua brillando
De las alturas
Día y noche a Pampacocha
Por nuestra acequia

Si los cerros nos hablarían
Los mayores contestarían
Con alegría
Recordando sus juventudes
Que ya se fueron
Along irrigation ditches and paths
I go, singing this walina1
Searching for a little water
Beautiful Cunya,2 not finding you there
I leave, weeping

Fresh, cool water
Glistening water
Water from the hill
Day and night to Pampacocha
Through our irrigation ditch

Fresh, cool water
Water glistening
From the highlands
Day and night to Pampacocha
Through our irrigation ditch

If the mountains could speak to us
Our elders would answer
With joy
Remembering their youth
A time that has long since passed

1. A genre of ritual water song from San Pedro de Casta. Sometimes spelled hualina, the term derives from warina, a reference to the ancient Wari civilization that built Casta's irrigation system.

2. Cunya (sometimes spelled Cuñaq or Kunyaq) is the name of a mountain spring that feeds Carhuayumac, the most important canal in San Pedro de Casta's irrigation system. While the name's etymology is somewhat unclear, it may allude onomatopoetically to the sound of the water as it bubbles forth from the spring.
